Angell Loop Trail, George Washington Camping Area

One of our favorite places to go hiking & camping is at the George Washington Camping Area off Rt. 44 in Glocester, Rhode Island. Set beside the Bowdish Reservoir, the campground is part of the 4000 acre George Washington Management Area that features 45 car campsites, 2 Adirondack style shelters, 5 backpack (hike to) platform sites and the 2, 6, & 8 mile Walkabout Trail loops. There are no showers available or electric hookups at any of the sites but water is available in the main campground as well as access to a freshwater beach & boat ramp (Limited to 9.5 horsepower).

The 2 mile Angell Loop Trail is located within the campground and accesses the five backpack hike in platform campsites. These are our favorite sites to camp at (typically #3) and can be reached by a short .5 mile hike from the parking area. The only amenity available at these sites is a single pit toilet. Because these are backpacking sites all gear including water must be hiked in and trash hiked out.

Emergency access rd. to the backpack sites
The trial emerges onto an emergency access rd that will bring you to the platform sites but will again thin to a trail beyond them. These sites give you a real sense of being tucked away in the woods but if needed, emergency vehicles can access the area.

Each site has a platform for your tent, fire ring & picnic table. There is always plenty of downed wood in the area to sustain a small campfire.

Once we setup camp, we continued to hike along the the remaining 1.5 miles of the Angell loop passing by native sites and then around by the Bowdish Reservoir and back into the main campground.

It was a nice sunny day, we found this guy/girl out getting warmed up on the trial.

The trail winds close to the reservoir returning to the main campground and trail head. We found lots of great views, a spot for a lunch break on the rocks and plenty of openings that gave us nice access to drown a few worms or catch a fish!

Forgot something? That's ok, there are various stores within 5 miles of the campground located in nearby CT that includes a Wal-mart, Dunkin Donuts, Tractor Supply Store and other local dining establishments.
