Field tasting the new Mountain House freeze-dried meal

When my son reached over and began to jokingly pull the meal his way saying "I can have the rest, right?" I figured this was a winner.

'Outdoor enthusiasts have made Mountain House freeze-dried food their first choice for over 40 years. Why? Because Mountain House tastes better than any other brand!'. Well at least that's the claim Mountain House makes on their meals packaging. So after I received a proto-type sample of their new 'Fully Cooked Turkey Meat Loaf with Mashed Seasoned Roasted Redskin Potatoes' via their Facebook fan page promotion, we set out to 'taste that claim'.

Weekend camping with our Scout pack provided a great setting for our 'field taste'. Saturday would prove to be full of activities, and we decided this would be great for the days evening meal. After a full day of fishing and field sports, and a brief night hike with some star gazing ahead of us, we were ready for something solid to eat.

We quickly added the required 1.5 cups of boiling water, removed the freshness packet, mixed, and resealed for 8 minutes. Once the steeping time was complete we ran down the simplified checklist: 1. Good portion size 2. Smells like home 3. looks like home 4. Tastes like home!

Mountain House has done it again and lived up to it's claim! Providing a lightweight tasty and filling meal that if I wasn't careful, would have been entirely consumed by my mashed potato loving Scout. No improvement needed in my opinion and I would absolutely put this on my list of approved backpacking meals.

Thanks for dinner.
